Reading exercise studies
Notice the participants, comparison group, duration and outcome. Does the paper describe a short response measured over days, or a longer pattern tracked over months? A study following a small group of previously inactive men for twelve weeks answers a narrower question than a population survey spanning several years, and neither should be treated as the final word on the subject.
Age range and starting fitness level matter as well. Findings from a group of competitive athletes rarely transfer neatly to a general readership, and a study recruiting only men already active several times a week will describe a different starting point than one recruiting people returning to movement after a long break.
